The Lord of the Rings - Sauron's army

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: literature and movies
    • Force: devilishly large

The two great battles of The Return of the King show that the great villain, Sauron, had a few hundred thousand soldiers at his command! But it doesn't end there. The troops described in the books and shown in the movies do not have the reinforcements or troops from all the other battles that took place off-screen.

In addition to numbers, Sauron's army was very diverse. In their ranks were men of the South and East, Orcos, elephant-like creatures and the terrible Nazgûl, terrifying specters almost impossible to kill (because they weren't even alive). Added to this, the army had advanced mech attack weapons and zero morality. If it weren't for Frodo, Aragorn's team wouldn't have stood a chance!

    Doctor Who - Daleks

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: TV Series
    • Force: enough to threaten the past, present and future

In the Doctor Who universe, the Daleks are the space Nazis (only much, much worse). Genetically engineered to destroy and encased in impenetrable armor, the Daleks have only one emotion: hate. In his view, all other species in the universe are inferior and must be “exterminated!”

The Daleks are so powerful that they almost managed to defeat an entire planet of Time Lords (that even traveling through time couldn't stop them). As much as you might like the Cybermen or other Doctor Who villains, there is no doubt that the Daleks are the ultimate threat.

    Halo - the Alliance

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: game
    • Force: too big

In the Halo game, the heroes are the United Nations Space Command, who defend humanity. But aliens are much stronger. Alliance forces, the coalition of extraterrestrials who want to destroy humans, are superior in numbers and technological power.

The Alliance manages to destroy almost all human colonies on other planets and come close to exterminating humanity. It just doesn't win because divisions arise that break the Alliance. Without these internal problems, humanity would be another species on the verge of extinction...

    Dune - Fremen

    • Fiction type: literature
    • Force: Capable of conquering 10 worlds

Born and raised on the most inhospitable planet in the universe, Fremen have become tougher than any other group of human beings. Under the leadership of the story's hero, Paul Atreides, they formed the most formidable army ever. Not even an entire intergalactic empire could resist!

The Fremen's military superiority lay in their adaptation to the desert, managing to subsist with only the bare minimum of resources. Throwing religious fanaticism and a desire for conquest into the mix, the Fremen army managed to conquer the entire known universe in just 12 years.

    Star Wars - Clone Army

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: movies
    • Force: galactic

The consensus among fans is that clones were superior to Stormtroopers. At the service of the republic (and later the emperor), clones were warriors trained from childhood to fight. Each received specialized training and their only goal in life was to be a good fighter.

When the order was given, the clones managed to kill (almost) all of the Jedi and formed the basis of the emperor's power. They were later replaced by Stormtroopers, troops recruited with a reputation for not being able to hit any protagonist hero, not even at 3 meters!

    Star Trek - Federation Fleet

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: movies and television series
    • Force: borderless

With a mission to "go where no man has gone before", the Federation fleet in Star Trek had a primary function of exploring the universe but also had a military side. Similar to the armed forces of the United Nations, the Federation fleet served as the defense force for peace in the galaxy.

In Star Trek, science and exploration were more important than military conquest. Even so, the Federation fleet was able to defend itself against major alien threats such as the Klingons. If the Federation decided to change course and attack other planets, would anyone be able to stop them?

    Starcraft - Zergs

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: game
    • Force: swarms of many millions

In the Starcraft game there are 3 factions: the Terrans (human beings), the Protoss and the Zerg. But the strangest (and perhaps the most dangerous) are the Zerg. Rather than building weapons, the Zerg adapt their genetic code to be more powerful. The goal: racial superiority.

In their quest to improve themselves, the Zerg attack and destroy other species, merging the best parts of the vanquished's genetic code into their own. United by telepathy and attacking in swarms, they are a massive force difficult to resist.

    Warhammer 40.000 - Orks

It's war! Discover 8 of fiction's greatest armies

    • Fiction type: board game
    • Force: countless billions

All Warhammer 40.000 armies have extreme proportions! Between humans, aliens and the armies of chaos, it's hard to pick a stronger group. But, in the opinion of many, Orks win by brute force.

The Orks are not the most sophisticated army in the game but they are crazy about war. Their huge troops can wipe out entire planets and are incredibly difficult to eliminate. They are proof that sometimes quantity is worth more than quality.
